pet surgery

Our veterinarian in Bakersfield at The Oaks Pet Hospital is committed to your pet's health and wellness throughout all stages of life. We offer a full range of veterinary services, including surgical procedures for pets in need. From a routine spay/neuter procedure to even the most complex of surgeries, our veterinary team has the experience, resources, and state-of-the-art technology needed to provide your pet with the best quality of care.

Reasons a Pet May Need a Surgical Procedure

There are many possible reasons as to why a pet may require a surgical procedure. For most pets, a spay or neuter surgery is highly recommended to prevent unwanted litters and to yield important health benefits. For example, did you know that spayed/neutered pets are less likely to develop certain types of cancers, including reproductive cancers? Furthermore, spayed and neutered pets tend to have a better overall temperament and are less likely to run away in the hopes of finding a mate.

In other cases, a pet may require a surgical procedure because it is a life-and-death situation. Unfortunately, this is common when pets have ingested a foreign object that is causing a life-threatening intestinal blockage. An emergency surgery may be needed to safely remove the object and clear out the blockage.

Another common reason for a pet to require surgery is to remove a mass or growth that has been detected. These growths can pose a threat to your pet's health and could even be cancerous, so we may recommend surgery to remove the growth and perform a biopsy, which will help to determine whether or not cancer is present.

Surgical Procedures Performed By Our Vet

Our vet is able to perform a number of surgical procedures here in our office, including:

  • TPLO (Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy) by Dr. Sidhu, who is certified in this procedure
  • Routine ACL repair for small dogs
  • Flexible endoscopy for minimally invasive foreign body removal
  • Rigid endoscopy for liver biopsies and more
  • Soft tissue surgeries (spay/neuter, tumor removal, cataract treatment, etc.)

We understand that bringing your pet in for surgery can be a nerve-racking experience for you and your pet, which is why we always treat your pet as though he or she were one of our own. All pets who will be undergoing an invasive procedure in our office are placed under general anesthesia. As necessary, pre-surgical blood work will be done to ensure that anesthesia will be carried out safely for your pet. Once your pet is placed under general anesthesia in preparation for surgery, our veterinary team carefully monitors all of your pet's vital signs throughout the procedure and afterwards as the anesthesia begins to wear off. We take anesthesia very seriously here at The Oaks Pet Hospital.

Following your pet's surgery, we will always take the time to answer any questions you may have and ensure that you're confident in all steps needed for your pet's recovery and aftercare at home.
